Give Veterans a Smile 2018
The Ohio State University College of Dentistry hosted its second annual ever "Give Veterans a Smile" on November 5th 2018, prior to Veterans Day. The college provided free dental screening exams for 17 Ohio veterans, at no charge. Patients came from every branch of service and had diverse dental needs that were addressed with over 90 x-rays taken and customized treatment plans created for each veteran. Within a month, more than half of the patient had already returned for continuing care. The atmosphere was one of mutual respect and community, as our faculty, staff, and student providers listened to patients' stories and shared military experiences of their own. The intangible centerpiece of the event was the spirit of camaraderie and support that was pervasive throughout the event. Patients ranged from 22 to 80 years old, and shared a common bond of service.
A special thanks to Dean Patrick Lloyd, Dr. Fonda Robinson, and Dr. Stanley Sharples for empowering the event and working with the College of Dentistry's Armed Forces Club to make it a success. Financial support and sponsorship came through the generous donation of Bank of America. Efforts from countless staff, faculty, and students at the College of Dentistry and the Office of Military and Veteran's Services helped make the event a success. Thank you all for helping to "Give Veterans a Smile," and honoring veterans' service to the country!
